In PTE Academic test, there will be questions where one or more images appear in front of you, and there are barely 25 seconds preparation before you have to describe it. Identify the type of image
There are many types of images for this describe image question such as bar chart, pie chart, line chart, table, flow chart, map and on some extreme cases with just random pictures. A good start would be identify the image type and read the image title if it has one or give a summary of what the image is. The example used here is a title-less flow chart of virus reproduction, so let’s start with “The flow chart describes the reproduction process of virus”.
Locate the key points
Each image has it’s own set of key points, you need to identify them quickly as these will be the content of your talk. The example above is quite self-explanatory – a straightforward 5 steps process of virus reproduction.
Connecting your sentences
Now, you probably got a rough idea of each process. OK cool, but we need to make it flow naturally from sentence to sentence. Let’s incorporate discourse markers in our speech.
What are discourse markers? They’re connecting words, examples include firstly, after, additionally etc. These words will help to connect your sentences together grammatically and also give you a nice duration boost of speech if you want to speak for around 35 seconds’ length.
A good Describe Image will always end with a conclusion
After finishing describe the key points, you need to let the computer know you are about to finish. A smart strategy would be formulating an ambiguous sentence which allows you to modify few words so it’s suitable for concluding all types of images.
